Rhys had the tea ready for when Gil and Catrin got back. In a re-run of the morning’s meeting, Warlow kicked things off. He tapped his pen on Jordan Nicholas’s image.

‘Mr Nicholas remains our key person of interest. I have spoken to CID colleagues, and they have visited some known contacts this very day on our behalf.’

‘Very generous,’ Gil said.

‘They were out there anyway,’ Warlow muttered. ‘However, no joy. He was not there, and the people they interviewed denied contact.’

‘Is it worth us watching the house in case he returns, sir?’ Rhys asked.

‘Good idea. But we don't have the manpower. Besides, the house backs on to open countryside. We’d need a team. And we do not have enough evidence to justify that. In fact, we have no evidence at all except for circumstantial.’

‘And his previous criminal history, sir,’ Rhys said.

‘Indeed. But I would like to speak to his grandmother. She lives in Kidwelly, only five miles from the Nicholas house. Well within striking or biking distance. My understanding is that she was actively involved in looking after the younger Nicholas, but who knows if she has a soft spot for Jordan? She's on my list for Monday.’

‘Sir, I've been thinking, what if it wasn't Jordan Nicholas's mother who tipped him off we were calling? What if it was the scaffolders?’

‘How many sugars in that tea, Rhys?’ Gil sounded impressed.

Warlow let this idea bounce around in his head. It made sense. ‘I like it, Rhys. I think we ought to take a punt and have a proper look at the depot, don't you?’

‘A warrant, sir?’

‘Why not? We have reasonable grounds given that Jordan Nicholas is an employee. Plus, I'd like to see their bloody faces when we turn up. He could even be holed up there somewhere.’

Rhys got up and posted the action on the board.

‘Catrin, Gil?’ Warlow looked at the other two officers.

‘It's a treasure trove,’ Gil said. ‘Mucho memorabilia. Enough to make your knees weak and press all your nostalgia buttons. You would have a field day.’

‘Anything useful though?’

‘He has a filing system of sorts for his paperwork,’ Catrin said. ‘Bank statements, utilities, council tax. He also has a financial advisor. I'll go through these, and if need be, I’ll visit the IFA.’

‘Okay, I like that too. Slim pickings, but someone must've planted the idea of this mysterious money, so follow that through. See where it takes us.’ Warlow regarded Jess and raised both eyebrows in invitation. She got up and waved to a Uniform at the back of the room. In return, the officer held up one hand, fingers spread to show five.

Jess nodded before holding up a copy of Nowhere to Ron. ‘The autobiography thread goes nowhere. Probert may have felt guilty about what happened, but he wasn’t remotely responsible for the death. Except in his own mind. I spoke to the dead player’s sister. Probert visited the family afterwards. He apologised and almost gave up playing. But Unsworth’s father convinced him otherwise. Ever since, he’s supported them, donated prizes, spoken at the father’s school at events to raise money.
